Flu Season Reminder: Keep the Air Flowing at Home

Amid the flu season, health authorities are reminding everyone to take precautions.
The World Health Organization (WHO) Philippines advises “getting the flu shot, covering coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow or tissue, washing hands regularly, staying home if feeling unwell, opening windows to encourage airflow, avoiding touching the eyes, nose, and mouth, steering clear of close contact with sick individuals, and wearing a mask if mild flu symptoms require going out.”
These everyday actions form the foundation of a layered approach to staying healthy.
Derived from the words “lumen” meaning light and “ventus” meaning wind – Lumiventt® Design Technology takes advantage of natural light and cross ventilation by having three-story high openings dubbed as Sky Patios as entry points to make this possible. (Photo taken at Fairlane Residences)
In recent years, one measure in particular—ventilation—has gained wider recognition. Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted just how important ventilation is in reducing the concentration of airborne particles indoors, reinforcing its role in everyday homes.
Proper ventilation helps indoor spaces feel fresher and more comfortable, especially when families spend longer hours indoors during flu-prone months. It also prevents stale air, reduces indoor odors, and helps limit the buildup of dust and allergens.
While it does not prevent the flu on its own, circulating fresh air complements other precautions, such as handwashing, masking, and surface cleaning.
Air flows in and around the building through the breezeways and vents, creating a gentle push-and-pull effect that brings in fresh air and drives out hot or stale air. (Upgraded model unit)
Urban residences, particularly high-rise condominiums, often face challenges in maintaining airflow. Windows may remain closed due to weather, pollution, or noise, and air-conditioning can trap indoor air.
Quadruple A developer DMCI Homes addresses this with Lumiventt® Design Technology, which enhances natural airflow and daylight throughout residential buildings.
Key to this system are Sky Patios—three-storey-high openings at the front and back of every few floors—along with breezeways and vents on both sides of a tower. Sky Patios act as open-air vertical openings that help fresh air move deeper into landscaped atriums and units, improving indoor comfort while allowing natural light to enter.
Coupled with the careful placement of doors, windows, and balconies that allow air and sunlight to move freely throughout the units, the build‑up of moisture, odors, and harmful gases is reduced—helping create a healthier living environment for residents. (Photo taken at The Orabella)
Health experts emphasize that no single measure is enough.
By combining vaccination, hygiene, responsible behavior, and proper ventilation, households can create a healthier indoor environment.
The COVID-19 experience has made it clear that keeping the air moving is now a practical and essential step, especially at the peak of flu season.
