Location: 19.1 kilometers south of Manila. It is bordered by Pasay City (north), Taguig City (northeast), Muntinlupa City (southeast), Las Piñas City (southwest), and Manila Bay (west).

The story behind the city

There are various stories about the city’s etymology from Palanyag to Parañaque. One story told about how the name originated from "Para Aniya Ake", a coachman’s misheard phrase when the Spanish soldiers in a carriage repeatedly exclaimed "¡Para aquí!" ("Stop here!"). Over time, the phrase stuck and thus led to the city’s name today.

During pre-colonial times, Parañaque City was known as the trade hub where people traded goods like salt, shoes, slippers, and weavings with the Chinese, Indonesians, Indians, and Malayans. When Fray Diego de Espiñar of the Order of Saint Augustine officially founded the city in 1580, Parañaque, which was then known as the village of Palanyag, became an independent pueblo along with other towns in various islands such as Malolos in Bulacan, Bulacabe in Panay, and Bantayan in Cebu.

The city also held significant historical relevance during various periods of Philippine history. It became one of the Spaniards' and Filipinos’ battle zones because of its proximity to Cavite, the bastion of the Katipuneros.

In addition, Parañaque City played a crucial role during the Japanese occupation by providing leadership to guerrilla movements like the Hunters ROTC and supplying essential resources, including food and arms. It also held historical significance as it gradually recovered from the battle of Manila in 1945.
