DMCI Homes and Gawad Kalinga recently held a housebuilding activity in GK Munting Pamayanan Village in Escopa 3, Project 4, Quezon City for the benefit of the differently-abled residents of the community.

Over 70 volunteers composed of DMCI Homes employees and residents of Flair Towers and Zinnia Towers condo communities helped in the clearing, digging, cementing, and plastering of a new building intended for persons with disabilities residing in the community.

The condominium-type shelter is one the three buildings donated by DMCI Homes in the Quezon City housing project dedicated for families having members with special needs.

Gawad Kalinga Quezon City Project Director Orlando Lumanog said the three buildings will house 70 21-square meter housing units with provision for second floor.

"Units at the ground floor are allotted for those with orthopedic impairments while units at the second floor are for visually-impaired residents and their families," Lumanog explained.

Forty-six-year-old visually-impaired Danilo Gabita who has been residing in the community since 2007 said he is grateful to company donors like DMCI Homes for helping provide a concrete and comfortable shelter for persons with disabilities in the community.

"Napakalaking tulong at napakaginhawa. Nakakatulog ka ng maayos na walang iniisip na baka biglang umulan. Hindi katulad noon nababahala kayo na yung putik baka biglang pumasok sa loob at rumupok yung aming mga kasangkapan," Gabita said of the housing units which replaced shanties made of scrap wood and metal.

DMCI Homes donated the housing units as part of its "Kaakbay ng Pamayanan" Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative which pertains to issues on social welfare and community development.

"Kaakbay ng Pamayanan" is under the umbrella CSR program "Kaakbay" which aims to foster good relations with the communities where DMCI Homes operates and bring forth social activities beneficial to the Filipino society.
