Las Piñas City spans a total land area of 32.69 square kilometers and is divided into two districts. District 1 comprises Daniel Fajardo, Elias Aldana, Ilaya, Manuyo Uno, Manuyo Dos, Zapote, CAA-B.F. International, Pulanglupa Uno, Pulanglupa Dos, Pamplona Uno, and Pamplona Tres. District 2 encompasses Almanza Uno, Almanza Dos, Pamplona Dos, Pilar Village, Talon Uno, Talon Dos, Talon Tres, Talon Cuatro, and Talon Singko. 

The city's population, as of 2020, stands at 606,293.

The story behind the city

Las Piñas City was previously a fishing and salt-farming village in the pre-colonial period before the Augustinian priest, Friar Diego Cera, discovered it in 1797. The friar’s persistence and vision led to the city’s development and the establishment of the Las Piñas Church, also known as Diocesan Shrine and Parish of St. Joseph or Bamboo Organ Church, in 1819. From that period, the industries of dye making, salt production, and handicrafts were introduced to the residents thanks to the established roads and bridges. 

Amid this growth, Las Piñas City also experienced hardships. Bandits, the cholera and smallpox outbreaks, and the bloody encounters between the Spaniards and Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo’s troops – all these contributed to the city’s history. 

Initially, Las Piñas City was part of Cavite until 1901, when Metro Manila became a part of the Rizal province. In 1907, Metro Manila was separated from the province of Rizal, and ultimately, Las Piñas City also became an independent municipality from Parañaque.

By 1997, Las Piñas City experienced rapid development and became one of the fastest-growing cities in Manila. This growth is thanks to the development of the south superhighway, a key infrastructure that connects the city to Luzon’s southern getaways.

Las Piñas City became the home of several culturally significant items and services throughout history. These things helped cement the city’s position as a cultural boiling pot as it still preserved these artifacts and practices to date.

One of them is the bamboo organ. This 9th-century church organ is known for its unique organ pipes; of its 1031 pipes, 902 are made of bamboo. This piano, Friar Diego Cera’s six-year work, has seen numerous man-made and natural disasters in its lifetime. Fortunately, it was restored in Germany and returned to the Las Piñas Church, also known as St. Joseph Parish Church, in 1975. The annual International Bamboo Organ Festival has been initiated to celebrate this organ’s restoration and sound. The organ was declared a National Cultural Treasure of the Philippines in 2003. The St. Joseph Parish Church, with the famous organ and the church museum at the old convent house, is a popular tourist destination for Filipinos and foreign visitors alike in Las Piñas City.

Las Piñas City has also turned coconut waste into a fruitful business. The city is known for its coconet weaving which turns waste coconut husks into coconuts used in constructing housing subdivisions in the area. In addition, the leftover peat and dust from the process are used as fertilizers.

Another business that Las Piñas City is known for is parol making. This has been a custom in the area for years. One can find plenty of parol stalls in Las Piñas City, particularly during the holidays. Even balikbayans head to this part of the metro and purchase parols to bring back some sort of Filipino Christmas memento to their part of the world. One can even order in bulk, as these parol stores are used to supplying to different establishments.

Lastly, Las Piñas City is the home of the famous Sarao jeepney factory. An interesting fact about the jeepney is that it’s a World War II artifact. They were initially military surplus jeeps that the Americans used. With the Filipino’s knack for repurposing materials, they utilized this vehicle for public transportation. 

In 1953, Leonardo Sarao, Sarao Motors’ founder, created the company that started refashioning these military jeeps into the ones we know today. The company handled the vehicle’s creation, maintenance, and aesthetic makeover.

Later on, this vehicle became the country’s “king of the road” because of how Sarao Motors made sure that each jeep had its personality. In addition, these jeeps are known for riding through streets despite carrying people and goods. 

Las Piñas City delicacies

Las Piñas City is also well-known for its delicious local dishes and appetizers. Some of them are the longganisa, a special sweet and spicy sausage made with local ingredients; tinapa, or smoked milkfish; and bagoong, a fermented shrimp paste commonly used in dishes like "kare-kare." While these items are now common throughout the country, Las Piñas City has its own recipe that makes the flavors unique from others.
