About Las Piñas

Las Piñas City with half of the area is used for residential and the other portion is utilized for commercial, institutional, and industrial purposes. The city has its many distinctions being labeled as the Salt Center of Metro Manila, Home of the Bamboo Organ, the Lantern Capital of Metro Manila, and the City of Love and Progress. This only shows that the city had its noteworthy events way back time.


It was all started when an Augustinian priest was appointed in Las Piñas in 1979 and make its way to help the small fishing village of Las Piñas which was still a barrio of Parañaque to its earliest development. The Las Piñas church was built in 1989 through the help of the priest and this was the era also where infrastructure like roads and bridges were constructed and known industries like dye-making, salt production, and handicrafts have emerged.

Las Piñas has served as the gateway to the CALABARZON region in the early ’90s. From the construction of the South Super Highway in the late ’60s to the building of Coastal Road which directly connects Metro Manila to Cavite.

Here are some famous industries that you can think of when you heard about las Piñas:

  • Salt-making Industry – during harvest time, you can see a certain part of the city where it is filled with white crystals in pyramid. This salt was graded into three (3) classifications:
    • Tertia which has the lowest quality and has the darkest color is usually used to preserve ice cream
    • Segunda salt on the other hand is used to preserve fish; and
    • Primera (First class) salt which Las Piñas is most known for, has its purest white color and being distributed to public markets in NCR for dishes at home and restaurants.
  • Sarao Jeepney Factory - Jeepneys were actually a remnant of World War II. This was made after the battle between the Japanese and Americans where many Willy jeeps were left behind and were later on improved by Filipinos by attaching roofs and extending the length as well as putting two rows of seats to increase the seating capacity. Sarao was the company that became famous for making jeepneys in 1953.
  • Bamboo Organ –considered as the national treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines, Bamboo Organ is the only organ in the 19th century that has survived and can still be used up to date. The organ has 1,031 pipes (902 are made out of bamboo while the rest are metal).

This eco-friendly city also implements the City Ordinance No. 1046-11 which bans the single-use of plastics. The LGU encourages the residents to bring their tote or eco-bags on buying goods and other stuff. The city also assigned “Anti-Plastik Pulis” who roams around the area to check all types of retail establishments and markets to assure that businessmen are complying. They also deployed officials to maintain the cleanliness of public places, waterways, and open space to resolve flash floods and the spread of disease.


  • LRT 1 Cavite Extension – the project is set to build eight stations that will connect Baclaran station to Niog station. This includes the Las Piñas point. Projected to accommodate 800,000 daily passengers from its current accommodation of 500,000. This aims to improve the travel time from 1 to 2 hours to only 25 minutes. This is also accessible going to CALAX and CAVITEX. Target completion is by 2022.
