Cebu City

The Queen City of the South

Cebu City is the oldest city in the first Spanish colony in the Philippines. Before it becomes the center of trade and industry in the Visayas, it played a significant role in history.

History

The first well-known battle happened in Mactan Island against foreign invaders which resulted in the death of the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Magellan was the one to first introduce Christianity to the locals where he placed a cross to represent significant events and to disseminate the Catholic faith. To date, the remains of the cross is a famous landmark in Cebu known as the Magellan’s Cross. Magellan also offered the queen a statue of the child of Jesus to commemorate the change. People highly value this event and celebrates the feast of the Sto. Niño every January, hence the inspiration of the biggest festival in the country, The Sinulog festival. This gives justice to why Cebu is well known as the “Seat of Christianity in Asia”.
